The inspiration behind "Lonesome Dove"

In 1866  Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving drove almost 2,000 head of cattle to Fort Sumner, New Mexico for the federal government to sell the beef to the  Bosque Redondo Indian reservation. The crossing was the best place on the Pecos River due to the sloped banks. The mini-series "Lonesome Dove" memorialized this part of history.
